Creating a Drone Show

Idea

Every captivating drone show starts with an idea. Our ideation process takes into consideration the wants, needs and goals of the client and presents them with a unique and custom creative solution that audiences will want to capture to rewatch again and again. From inception to display this process will take around 3 months.

Creative Process

Our creative team led by the Creative Director will turn the idea into a visually captivating drone show by brainstorming, designing, testing and refining until it is perfect from every aspect. There are two options when it comes to our drone shows. If you would like something unique, we offer a customized show; or you may want to consider sponsoring an existing show.

Execution

This is where all the pieces come together into one beautiful finished product, our favorite part of the project. The team carries out further testing, sets up the drones, and hands over the approved animation to the Flight Operations team, who will upload it into the system so it can be deployed and tested at Celestial’s flight base.

Show Time

After weeks of preparation, testing, and perfecting, the drone art show is ready to be shared with the world on Earth’s largest canvas.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Drone Shows

The cost of a drone show can vary significantly depending on a variety of factors, including the number of drones used, the complexity of the performance, the duration of the show, the location, and the specific requirements of the event. Here are some key factors that can influence the cost of a drone show:

Number of Drones: The more drones used in the show, the higher the cost. Small shows with a few drones will be less expensive than large shows with hundreds or even thousands of drones.

Duration: Longer drone shows will generally cost more than shorter ones because they require more battery power and coordination.

Location: The cost of a drone show may vary depending on the location of the event. Shows in remote or challenging locations may require more logistical planning and incur additional expenses.

Licensing and Permits: Some locations may require permits or licences to operate drones, and the cost of obtaining these permits can add to the overall cost.

Animation: If you have specific themes, logos, or branding elements that need to be integrated into the drone show, this can increase the time and cost required for animation.

Technical Support: The cost of technical support, including drone operators, ground crew, and safety personnel, is a significant part of the overall cost.

Insurance: Liability insurance is necessary to cover any accidents or damages that may occur during the show.

Rehearsals and Testing: Testing and rehearsal flights are essential to ensure the safety and success of the show, and they can contribute to the cost.

Additional Effects: Some drone shows may incorporate other special effects, such as fireworks, lasers, or music synchronisation, which can increase the cost.

Hundreds! Since Celestial launched in 2020, we have continued to grow our team, which includes expanding the number of drones in our swarms. Our drones currently reside at multiple locations across the globe, including in the US’ and each individual drone is labeled with an alien or celestial-themed name. Find out what makes ‘Nebula’ our most famous drone.

Yes, drones and pyrotechnics can be displayed simultaneously (although we like to see our drone lights as being the more environmentally friendly successors to traditional firework displays).

Yes, advances in technology mean that our drones are increasingly weather agnostic, meaning bad weather becomes less of a reason not to fly. For safety reasons however, it is not recommended to fly drones in very adverse weather conditions such as very high winds or extremely heavy rain.

Yes, our animation process allows for a very true-to-life digital simulation of the drone show for clients to view on screen and there is always the opportunity for clients to view a demo show flight two weeks prior to the show date.

Drone show duration is dictated by the battery runtime of single drone swarm (around 8-10 minutes), however we are able to increase the length of shows by sequentially flying multiple swarms within a fleet.

Besides meticulous planning and preparation, drone light shows adhere to stringent safety regulations established by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This means that when delivered by a team of professionals, drone shows are extremely safe.

The lead time for a drone show depends on multiple factors; location, whether the animation is custom made, synced to music, etc. If you’re looking for the creation of a bespoke drone show, we recommend getting in touch at least three months before your event.

Celestial drone shows are performed outdoors only. While indoor drone shows are possible, our technology is built for outdoors where we feel the biggest impact can be made in terms of scale. Outdoor shows also offer better audience safety and greener credentials when compared to smaller indoor drones, of which some are more disposable.

Yes, in fact we recommend it! Watching a drone show accompanied by sound elevates the experience to another level, and we often find a multi-sensory experience to be more impactful.

Celestial takes care of all permissions required to fly a drone show so our clients don’t need to. Permissions can include those such as;

  • Operational authorisation from the aviation authority of the country where the show will be performed.

  • If the show is to take place in restricted airspace then permission must be obtained from the relevant airport/authorities.

  • A NOTAM (Notice To Airmen) must be posted in order to inform other airspace users of the potential hazard caused by the drone show.

Given the vast scale of our drone shows, wide open outdoor spaces provide the best take-off locations. Drones are laid out in a grid for take-off and an area of 55m in radius surrounding the proposed drone flight volume is required as a ‘sterile zone’ – void of people for the duration of the flight, to ensure we’re in keeping with safety regulations as set by the Civil Aviation Authority. This makes more residential areas more challenging, but not impossible so long as the sterile area is maintained. Line of sight from the audience also has to be taken into consideration to ensure viewers get the best view of the show.
