Edinburgh Hogmanay | "Farewell"

Our first ever commission was to deliver a groundbreaking event for Edinburgh New Year Hogmanay.

December 2020 / Edinburgh, UK / For City of Edinburgh Council

Inspired by the verse of Scottish Poet Laureate Jackie Kay, Celestial designed and filmed three spectacular drone shows in the Scottish Highlands and Edinburgh.

To deliver this epic New Year drone show for Edinburgh Hogmanay, Celestial’s creatives worked alongside production partners Underbelly, visual artist Gary Wilson and cult band Niteworks to take our audience on a magical journey across Scotland.

Created during the COVID-19 pandemic, our team battled the threat of increasingly heightened lockdown regulations, strict regulations and treacherous weather conditions to deliver multiple light displays under pressure and in extreme locations. Meanwhile, our ground and aerial camera teams valiantly captured the dazzling artwork with cinematic flair.

David Tenant, Siobhan Redmond and a host of others voiced Jackie Kay’s evocative poems to provide extra production value, alongside the powerful musical score. The resulting film captured the imagination of millions, becoming a viral success and catapulting Celestial onto the world stage.

The reaction online is quite amazing. What you have pulled off is top of the tree and it has honestly been a pleasure to work with you all.
